🛡Day 3 – My Refuge and Fortress

"I will say of the Lord, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress;
My God, in Him I will trust.’"
Psalm 91:2 (NKJV)

We live in a culture where openly loving God is not always welcome. Speaking about Him or living in a way that honors Him can bring criticism or even rejection. People are quick to cancel you for standing on God’s Word. But the Bible reminds us that choosing God’s presence over public approval is always worth it.

Daniel was a faithful servant of God who lived in Babylon after being taken captive from Judah. Though surrounded by a culture that worshipped other gods, Daniel remained devoted to the Lord. His integrity and unwavering prayer life set him apart, even when it puts his life at risk.

When praying to God became illegal, he still knelt by his window and prayed three times a day, just as he always had (Daniel 6:10). For Daniel, getting cancelled was a death sentence -- he was thrown into the lion's den. Yet his trust never wavered. And God honored that trust by shutting the mouths of the lions.

Trusting God does not mean life will be easy, but it does mean we are never alone. Calling Him our refuge means running to Him first. A refuge is a safe place, a shelter that cannot be broken into. God is both tender and strong. He holds us close and shields us with His power. The psalmist declared this truth:

“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” —Psalm 46:1 (NIV)

I remember a season when my daughter needed an unexpected surgery right in the middle of a busy stretch at work. The deadlines kept coming, but my world felt like it stood still as I sat by her hospital bed. Fear crept in when she began running fevers, and the weight on my heart grew heavy. One night I whispered, “Lord, I am overwhelmed. Pour Your strength and courage into me.” In that moment, I surrendered control. Peace came—not because the circumstances changed, but because I trusted Him to carry us through. Her fever broke, and her strength returned two days later. My family and I were so thankful that God had healed her. He had been my refuge, a reminder that He always is.

Maybe you are carrying something heavy right now. It could be a health crisis, financial stress, a broken relationship, or simply too much on your plate. You don’t have to carry it alone. God is your refuge. Trust Him, allow Him to take control of your situation, and let His peace steady your heart.

As Daniel did, choose to trust in His presence over fear, anxiety, and stress. Like the psalmist, you can rest knowing He is your "ever-present" help. And when you do, you will find that His peace is not fragile—it is unshakable. His covering will hold you steady in the storm, and His love will remind you that you are never alone.

Today’s Invitation

Take a few minutes today to name the heaviest burden on your heart. Whisper, “Lord, I trust You with this.” Write it down if you can, and release it into His care.

Let’s Reflect

  • Where do you feel “cancelled,” misunderstood, or under pressure to hide your faith?
  • What challenge are you currently facing that feels impossible or terrifying?
  • What would trusting God look like for you today?

Let’s Pray

God, You are my safe place. When fear rises, teach me to run to You first. Give me the courage to fully trust You, even when I am uncertain about how things will turn out. Be my refuge, my strength, and my fortress.

Amen.
