"Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you." – James 4:8 (ESV)
Introduction
Every love story begins with tender, awe-filled moments that capture the heart. Our relationship with God is no different. Those first encounters with His presence often overflow with wonder, joy, and a deep hunger to know Him more. Yet over time, distractions, routines, and struggles can gradually dim that first love.
This 2-day devotional series is an invitation to return—to rediscover the sweetness of your first devotion to Him and to rekindle that love. As we draw near, His presence restores joy, renews gratitude, and awakens fresh wonder in our faith journey.
May these reflections lead you back to the One who remembers your first devotion to Him—and who wants to draw near to you now.
Devotional
There’s something unforgettable about the newness of love. I remember my first few dates with my husband: the surprises he planned, the thoughtful details, and the way he made me feel cherished. It felt like stepping into a romantic movie—full of wonder, joy, and freshness that made my heart leap. He still shows me incredible love today, but those first moments hold a sweetness I’ll never forget.
Our relationship with God often begins the same way. When His love captures our hearts, we talk about Him constantly, seek Him eagerly, and long to grow closer. Those first days of faith overflow with awe, discovery, and joy—like falling in love for the very first time.
But distractions creep in, and routines dull our passion. God reminded Israel, through the prophet Jeremiah:
“I remember the devotion of your youth, your love as a bride, how you followed me in the wilderness, in a land not sown” – Jeremiah 2:2 (ESV).
God treasures those first acts of devotion, but He also calls us back to that wholehearted love.
Through Joel, He speaks again:
“Yet even now,” declares the Lord, “return to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning; and rend your hearts and not your garments. Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love” (Joel 2:12–13, ESV).
God does not wait at a distance—He invites us to come back now, with open hearts, because His mercy never fails.
Three Practices for Returning to God
1. Start with Stillness
“Be still, and know that I am God.” – Psalm 46:10 (ESV)
Stillness creates space for God to breathe life into our souls. When the world is loud, quiet moments remind us of who He is—and that He delights in being near us.
2. Practice Gratitude
“Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”
– 1 Thessalonians 5:18 (ESV)
Gratitude reshapes our perspective. Instead of focusing on what we lack, it opens our eyes to see God’s hand in every detail of our lives.
3. Reflect and Remember
“Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits.” – Psalm 103:2 (ESV)
Remembering God’s past faithfulness anchors our hearts. Think of the times He made a way when there seemed to be no way. Those memories steady us when today’s challenges feel heavy.
Just as earthly relationships flourish when love is renewed, our walk with God deepens when we return to Him with stillness, gratitude, and remembrance. Each step draws us closer. And in His presence, we rediscover the joy and wonder of being in love with our Heavenly Father.
Let’s Reflect
Let’s Pray
Lord, thank You for loving me with steadfast love. Forgive me for the times I’ve let my devotion fade. Today, I choose to return to You with my whole heart. Teach me to be still, to live with gratitude, and to remember Your faithfulness. Restore the joy of my first love and renew my passion to walk closely with You.
Amen.
