Peace Beyond All Understanding

Philippians 4:7 (NKJV) – “And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

I truly experienced this promise on September 15, 2024.

The day before, we had a beautiful time celebrating Mom Dora’s 90th birthday. The joy and laughter we shared with family made for a precious memory. But the celebration was short-lived. While traveling from Georgia back to Fort Mill and Charlotte, I received a call just outside of Sparta, Georgia, that shook me to my core—my niece told me that my son, Volarrio, had been in a severe car accident. They had airlifted him to Atrium Hospital in Macon, Georgia.

My husband and I were in separate cars, so I called him, and we arranged to meet in Augusta. When he arrived, I jumped into his car, and by then the hospital had already called. The doctor’s voice was polite but carried a heaviness. He explained that Volarrio had been hit by an 18-wheeler, suffered a head injury, was on a ventilator, and needed emergency surgery to relieve swelling in his brain.

The Holy Spirit quickened me to pray. I took authority over the situation and called on Jehovah Jireh, the God who heals. I thanked Him that my son was still alive and that there was still blood running through his veins. The Holy Spirit prompted me to call Pastor Nickie, who prayed with me. As she prayed, I felt a warm breeze wash over me, and instantly, every worry lifted. A supernatural calm settled over me—this was the peace beyond understanding that Philippians 4:7 describes.

When we arrived at the ICU, an advocate explained the situation and told us they were still removing glass from his skin. I asked to see him before surgery, and after two hours, we were allowed in. I touched my son and prayed, “Father, he is in Your hands, and I believe he will be all right.”

The surgery went well, though they said the night ahead would determine his outcome. But I knew in my spirit he was going to be fine. The very next day, they removed the ventilator—and not only did he breathe on his own, but he began to talk. The doctors themselves said they had witnessed a miracle.

When I later saw pictures of his car, I burst into tears of praise. The vehicle was unrecognizable. Yet God, my protector, had shielded my son. Each day he grew stronger. By Saturday, just a week later, he was walking outside with a walker, and that very day, he was released from the hospital.

Today, Volarrio is walking without even a limp. He went through the storm, but God healed him completely. I give Him all the glory.

This testimony serves as a reminder that the same God who brought peace and healing during this crisis is the one who walks beside you today. Whatever storm you may be facing, know that His peace is available to guard your heart and mind, and His healing power is not limited by circumstances. The God who did it for one will surely meet you with the same love, strength, and peace beyond understanding.

Reflection Questions

  1. What storm are you facing that requires God’s peace?
  2. Do you believe God’s promise that His peace will guard your emotions and your thoughts during the storm?
  3. Will you choose to trust in God's peace, which surpasses all understanding, in every situation you encounter?

Prayer

Father God, thank You for being the healer and for giving a peace that surpasses understanding. Fill our hearts with Your calm when life feels overwhelming. Remind us that Your presence is stronger than our fears. Guard our minds, steady our steps, and let Your peace carry us through every circumstance.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
